A stunning two-page spread highlighting my grandmother's Guyanese gojas (a spiced coconut filled pastry) along with the personal stories and memories I will forever carry with me. Captured beautifully by Antara Sinha who worked on this for months to ensure it was a true reflection of my story. Thank you so much, @antarasinha 🙏.

This piece represents a time in my life where I was building the foundation of my dual identity as a Guyanese-American girl growing up in Queens, NY. I remember staying home from school on Phagwah to help my mom and grandma cook trays of sweets to share with our extended loved ones. My friends at school couldn't understand because it was not a national holiday, but I knew what a special time this was for us. 

When I started my blog 11 years ago I never thought that I'd one day be in Food and Wine magazine, and sharing the foods of my underrepresented culture at that. I am so deeply thankful for the opportunities to represent my community in these larger spaces.

Hi everyone! I am so excited to share this article with you. A couple of months ago I was asked to pitch Guyanese cuisine to represent New York on this list. There are endless possible options of cuisines to represent New York, a food capital of the world. I had hope, but didn't think they would choose Guyana for this placement. The Condé Nast editors loved my pitch and decided to go with it! They asked me to write the piece so that it would be as honest and representative of Guyanese cuisine in NYC as possible. The editors were interested and curious and wanted to understand every dish/ingredient I listed, down to cassava casareep. 

In a time where we see very little representation for ethnic cuisines, I am very thankful for the opportunity to use my voice to represent my culture in this way.

回家什么食物让你觉得自己回家?虽然 回家什么食物让你觉得自己回家?虽然 my parents and I live in separate homes, when I go to their place  the aroma of curry cooking or geera and garlic frying breeds familiarity. I've learned so much about their lives through knowing the foods they ate and how they were prepared. These conversations are never formal either. While chopping onions, my father would drop snippets of how a dish was cooked back home. Listening with intention has allowed me to learn about the foods of my culture in a unique way. I think these days anyone can create a recipe, but it's the stories in the process that really give context to a dish.

If I had a restaurant this plate would be on the menu and it would be called "home." Dhal, rice, with bounjal shrimp, fry bhaji and fry fish, $6.99. 😅

I've been on a social media break these last few weeks taking some time to focus on my family and self-care. Reflecting, learning, and planning. During my time away I've also been updating old recipes with new photos and revised measurements. Will be sharing in the coming weeks.

Our very own family members say inappropriate things and we just sweep it under the rug. Taking a stand starts at home. *
