Alica

My previous blog was called, The Inner Gourmet. When I started blogging 7 years ago, I chose this blog name because I believe that Caribbean food is truly gourmet as many of our cooking techniques can be quite arduous and refined. Although this is what I felt, the name was not perceived that way. Over the years I realized I needed a name that was more reflective of those feelings, but also of the food I cook. The Inner Gourmet was too general of an identity. Readers couldn’t tell right away what my blog was about and that poses a challenge for any brand.

For those of you who are new here, this is what my previous blog looked like:

So what’s different about Alica’s Pepperpot?

  1. Layout- The new layout is much cleaner and easier to navigate.
  2. 首页page–The homepage has more accessible content available for viewing in one click.
  3. Recipe index–The recipes that are on the blog are now effortlessly searchable via photo or search box.
  4. Recipe print button– Now you’ll have the option to print a recipe without the blog post content and photos.
  5. Subscribe–A new option to subscribe to recipe posts. Receive them straight in your email.

  • A variety of recipes including more Caribbean-influenced dishes and some American favorites
  • In the coming months, you will see sponsored content and some advertising
  • A brand new section on the blog which I will be announcing in September!

Of course I’m biased because I saw the entire process from conception to final product. It turned out fantastic and I think the comments say it all! Great job, and as official taste tester, I can’t wait to taste the new creations you come up with.

Hi everyone! I am so 纽约:圭亚那美食。

Hi everyone! I am so excited to share this 文章 with you. A couple of months ago I was asked to pitch Guyanese cuisine to represent New York on this list. There are endless possible options of cuisines to represent New York, a food capital of the world. I had hope, but didn't think they would choose Guyana for this placement. The Condé Nast editors loved my pitch and decided to go with it! They asked me to write the piece so that it would be as honest and representative of Guyanese cuisine in NYC as possible. The editors were interested and curious and wanted to understand every dish/ingredient I listed, down to cassava casareep.

In a time where we see very little representation for ethnic cuisines, I am very thankful for the opportunity to use my voice to represent my culture in this way.

首页 What foods make you feel like home? Although 首页 What foods make you feel like home? Although my parents and I live in separate homes, when I go to their place the aroma of curry cooking or geera and garlic frying breeds familiarity. I've learned so much about their lives through knowing the foods they ate and how they were prepared. These conversations are never formal either. While chopping onions, my father would drop snippets of how a dish was cooked back home. Listening with intention has allowed me to learn about the foods of my culture in a unique way. I think these days anyone can create a recipe, but it's the stories in the process that really give context to a dish.

While I can't truly understand what the black community is feeling, I stand with them in the fight for racial equality. I am married to a black man and I have two bi-racial children. My parents recall memories of growing up in Guyana and getting an allotment of dhal and rice for the month. When they ran out, they had to find other things to cook that would make a complete meal, all while using very few ingredients. Dishes like khichri, oil & rice, and shine rice come to mind. What about you?

Although I was not born in Guyana and did not have the same experiences, I'm thankful my parents made these dishes a regular part of our menu. It's helped me connect to my culture in a very unique way.
