虾和西兰花炒

One of my favorite Chinese take-out meals is shrimp and broccoli. I love the way it’s cooked at Chinese-American restaurants. Luscious shrimp stir fried with crunchy broccoli and a bit of piping hot rice just hits the spot when you’re hungry! We do take out every now and then, but I love making it at…

圭亚那炸波拉鸡

Fry bora is one of my favorite Guyanese vegetable dishes. It is also known as Chinese long beans, yard beans, or snake beans. It’s delicious with seafood, meat, or all by itself, but I enjoy it best with chicken. My mother probably laughs every time I tell her I’m making fry bora for dinner. I…

简单的巧克力蛋糕

My older son is a chocolate lover and this easy chocolate cake is his favorite cake, ever! It’s fluffy, chocolatey, and perfectly moist. I’ve made it a little fancier by making it into a layer cake. The batter bakes beautifully as cupcakes and is perfect with cream cheese frosting. It’s so versatile and is a…

烤混蛋三文鱼

Jerk salmon is an easy protein to pull together for a quick weeknight meal or party. What I love most about using salmon for this recipe is that the firmness of the fish holds up well to the heavy seasoning and spices of the jerk marinade. To really give it some extra flavor, I add…

Sugar Roti-Alica's Pepperpot

糖烤:我童年的味道

There are few foods that bring about a taste of my childhood. Tunnocks caramel, smarties chocolates, and mom’s sugar roti. As a young girl there was nothing that made me happier than knowing my mom was making paratha roti for dinner. And my excitement had nothing to do with the paratha. It was because I…

圭亚那式咸羊肉

Corned mutton with potatoes is a favorite breakfast dish I grew up eating. Mostly on the weekends because my mom would pair it with oil roti, sada, or bakes which took some time to make. Corned mutton is also served as an anytime meal when you just want something quick and don’t feel like spending…

Aloo roti(土豆馅面包)

Aloo Roti(土豆馅面包)

One of my mom’s most memorable rotis is this aloo roti–a flatbread stuffed with spiced mashed potatoes. The other stunner is her dhal puri (I know guys, I’m posting a recipe soon, promise). We usually had this alongside some type of curry dish. The filling was flavored simply with few ingredients; butter, salt, hot pepper,…

烤蛋ust-Alica's Pepperpot

烤蛋C

Baked custard was one of those dishes that I disfavored as a child. I never liked the look of it; it had the appearance of sweet scrambled eggs to me and whenever my mom made it for us, I’d pass and go for a scoop of ice cream instead. As an adult, it has become…

纽约:圭亚那美食。 Hi everyone! I am so 纽约:圭亚那美食。

Hi everyone! I am so excited to share this article with you. A couple of months ago I was asked to pitch Guyanese cuisine to represent New York on this list. There are endless possible options of cuisines to represent New York, a food capital of the world. I had hope, but didn't think they would choose Guyana for this placement. The Condé Nast editors loved my pitch and decided to go with it! They asked me to write the piece so that it would be as honest and representative of Guyanese cuisine in NYC as possible. The editors were interested and curious and wanted to understand every dish/ingredient I listed, down to cassava casareep.

In a time where we see very little representation for ethnic cuisines, I am very thankful for the opportunity to use my voice to represent my culture in this way.

Click the link in my bio to read and please feel free to share!

首页 What foods make you feel like home? Although 首页 What foods make you feel like home? Although my parents and I live in separate homes, when I go to their place the aroma of curry cooking or geera and garlic frying breeds familiarity. I've learned so much about their lives through knowing the foods they ate and how they were prepared. These conversations are never formal either. While chopping onions, my father would drop snippets of how a dish was cooked back home. Listening with intention has allowed me to learn about the foods of my culture in a unique way. I think these days anyone can create a recipe, but it's the stories in the process that really give context to a dish.

I've been on a social media break these last few weeks taking some time to focus on my family and self-care. Reflecting, learning, and planning. During my time away I've also been updating old recipes with new photos and revised measurements. Will be sharing in the coming weeks.

So many of us are waking up each day with a heavy So many of us are waking up each day with a heavy heart, myself included. While I can't truly understand what the black community is feeling, I stand with them in the fight for racial equality. I am married to a black man and I have two bi-racial children. This is my fight too.
I've added a link below for various places to donate, if you are able to help monetarily. Access it through my profile page. Whether you can afford to donate or not, one important way you can help is by having conversations with friends and family members when they make racist comments. Our very own family members say inappropriate things and we just sweep it under the rug. Taking a stand starts at home. *

Fevergrass ☕ | My parents have a giant tulsi pla Fevergrass ☕ | My parents have a giant tulsi plant in their garden. As well as an endless amount of fevergrass (aka lemongrass). These two herbs have tremendous health benefits. Whenever someone was sick in our house with any type of ailment this was the tea we made. Check my stories to see how easy it is to brew. I also added lemon peel, fresh ginger, cloves, and cinnamon. It is one of the most fragrant and healing teas you could make. When I was younger I used to think this was stuff only ole people drank. Now look at me lol. Straight aunty vibes!

My parents recall memories of growing up in Guyana and getting an allotment of dhal and rice for the month. When they ran out, they had to find other things to cook that would make a complete meal, all while using very few ingredients. Dishes like khichri, oil & rice, and shine rice come to mind. What about you?

Although I was not born in Guyana and did not have the same experiences, I'm thankful my parents made these dishes a regular part of our menu. It's helped me connect to my culture in a very unique way.
